"I think people need to take a step back and think about why they started their business in the first place because it does take you back to a more exciting, less difficult time and it reconnects you with your purpose and your why and your mission."
Merlino says that taking the time to think about the reasons you originally started your company is extremely important to refreshing your excitement and engagement. Since startups are constantly facing new challenges, it's important to bring back the mentality from day one, when that passion was strongest. This will help you stay motivated when times get hard.
But Merlino says it's also important to bring yourself back to reality after doing so. Since the current state of your business is probably much different than it was on day one, make sure you have a plan for any new changes in your company including new customers, branding, employees and overall vision. Have a plan for going forward while maintaining the fire that got your started.
"We also we really do have to come to terms with the fact that how it was is not coming back. The kind of customers or the kind of situations we were in are not necessarily coming back. So what are we looking for moving forward? What kind of customers? Where can we go?"
