Intuitive Surgical: Integrated Table Motion FDA-Approved
Intuitive Surgical, Inc. ISRG and Trumpf Medical – a division of Hill-Rom Holdings HRC – recently announced FDA clearance for the Integrated Table Motion for the da Vinci Xi Surgical System in the domestic market.
Integrated Table Motion incorporates Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci Xi and Trumpf Medical’s TruSystem 7000dV. While da Vinci Xi is a robotic aided surgical system, TruSystem 7000dV is a sophisticated operating table. The combination is expected to help surgeons and anesthesiologists make essential table adjustments in order to execute surgeries in an efficient manner.
During the coming months, the new technology will be made available in the domestic market and will also be deployed in hospitals across the country. New York-based Crouse Hospital is set to be one of the first hospitals to implement the new product.
We note that Integrated Table Motion for the da Vinci Xi Surgical System has been launched in Europe, following the CE Mark Approval in June, last year. Meanwhile, Intuitive Surgical continues to expand its product portfolio, which we believe, is a key growth catalyst.
Intuitive Surgical added 45 millimeter Xi stapler to its product portfolio in the first quarter of 2015, while Harmonic Curved Shears and a second set of instruments were introduced in the second quarter. Additionally, the company filed for FDA 510(k) clearances for Single-Site instruments and 30mm EndoWrist stapler in the third quarter.
We believe that growing adoption of Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci system among physicians for general surgery, oncology, urology and gynecology procedures is a key catalyst. Moreover, increasing procedural volumes outside the U.S. and an expanding product pipeline presents significant growth opportunities for the company.
Increasing market potential for surgical robots is a major tailwind in our view. According to a report by RnR Market Research, the surgical robots market will be worth $20 billion by 2021. Apart from Intuitive Surgical, other players in this market include Mazor Robotics MZOR and Accuray ARAY.
