TWST: When you spoke to us in 2008, you were downplaying value and looking at growth stocks. Where are you now in terms of that dichotomy?
Mr. Smith: Since the beginning of the year, we have been overweight value stocks and continue to maintain that position. When comparing value versus growth, we examine valuation, momentum and interest rate factors - which are all favoring value currently.
TWST: What about in terms of cap size? What is in favor and what is out of favor?
Mr. Smith: Currently our quantitative models are favoring small- and mid-cap stocks, which is being driven by momentum and interest rate factors.
TWST: Is it a change in the models that causes you to undertake that type of shift in your portfolio?
Mr. Smith: Yes, we are heavily driven by our quantitative models, which guide the decision-making process in how we arrive at target allocations.
TWST: Within those models, are certain fundamental factors more important to you than others when selecting stocks?
Mr. Smith: I think we take a balanced approach by incorporating different investment disciplines. For example, we use valuation factors that could be as simple as...
