iPhone 6 most popular gadget of 2014

If there’s one word that could describe Apple’s 2014, it’s “big.” Not only did the company release its larger iPhone 6 and massive iPhone 6 Plus, the later of which has been a sales behemoth, it also debuted two new iPads and unveiled its much anticipated Apple Watch.

It was the iPhone 6, though, that got all of the love, as the smartphone took the top spot among most searched for gadgets on Yahoo in 2014. And with its larger screen, slimmer design, and improved camera, the iPhone 6 is easily the best iPhone Apple has ever made.

Readers didn’t search as much for the iPhone 6 Plus, but that doesn’t mean the handset didn’t generate enough interest. On the contrary, the 6 Plus, Apple’s largest smartphone to-date, received plenty of attention for its much-reported propensity to bend and deform in owner’s pockets.

In truth, Apple said it received just nine reports of bent iPhone 6 Pluses. Videos did surface of iPhone 6 Pluses being bent, but those were done deliberately. Unless there is some cabal of iPhone 6 Plus users that have banded together to keep complaints about 6 Pluses out of the spotlight, it’s safe to say the kerfuffle was nothing more than hype.

It wasn’t just Apple’s iPhones that Yahoo users were interested, the iPad mini was also up there, coming in at number six on the list of top 10 searched for gadgets. What’s interesting is that the iPad mini 3 isn’t much of an upgrade versus the iPad mini 2.

In fact, the only difference between the two is that the mini 3 comes with Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint reader, while the mini 2 doesn’t. What kind of premium does such a small carry? Try $100. That’s right, the mini 3 costs $399, while the mini 2 is just $299.

Apple saved the biggest tablet changes for its new iPad Air 2. Not only is it slimmer than the first-generation Air, it also has an improved display, faster processor and an upgraded camera.

Surprisingly, the Apple Watch didn’t crack the top 10 most searched for tech items. The wearable, which had been rumored for quite some time prior to its unveiling, is slated to be released in 2015. The watch will be available in both men’s and women’s sizes and will feature optional 18K gold body.

Whether the watch didn’t make it into the top 10 because it’s still not available, or because potential customers just aren’t interested enough, remains to be seen.

Will Apple repeat its impressive performance in 2015? We’ll just have to wait and see.
