If cars could talk, what would they say? The miles traveled, the people moved, and the memories carried are all part of their narrative. And the longer the journey, the more stories to tell. So, just imagine what Irv Gordon’s 1966 Volvo P1800 has seen in its 3 million-mile lifetime.
Gordon, an East Patchogue, New York, native, bought his gorgeous P1800 fresh off the lot in 1966. In only 10 years he managed to put 500,000 miles on the odometer, and in 1987, he celebrated his first million miles in New York’s Central Park.
Reaching nearly every inch of the U.S., Irv and his Volvo racked up 2 million miles in 2002 while driving down the center of Times Square, and early last month he put the 3 millionth mile on his beloved P1800, in one of the few states where him and his baby had yet to visit – Alaska.
In 2002, at 1.69 million miles, Irv had already cemented his place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most miles driven on an originally owned car. Now, he’s nearly doubled his record, making it even further out of reach for any other million-milers aspiring to be the next Irv Gordon. Here’s to another million, Irv.
