General Motors sales rise 16 percent as pickup trucks post big gains

DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Co. said Friday that its January U.S. sales rose 16 percent, led by the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Detroit automaker said it sold 194,699 cars and trucks last month, up from 167,962 a year earlier.

TOP SELLERS: Chevrolet Silverado was up 32 percent to 35,445. GMC Sierra sales rose 35 percent to 12,846.

HOT MODELS: Buick Verano compact luxury car saw sales rise more than four times the number from a year earlier. The company sold 3,660 Veranos last month.
