Toyota's January sales rise 26.6 percent with Corolla and Camry paving way

TORRANCE, Calif. (AP) -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. said Friday that its U.S. sales rose 26.6 percent in January behind strong numbers for the Camry and Corrolla cars.

BY THE NUMBERS: The Japanese automaker sold 157,725 vehicles last month, compared with 124,540 in January 2012. Adjusted for one more selling day last month than in January 2012, the average daily sales rate rose 21.6 percent.

TOP SELLER: The Camry mid-size car, at 31,897, an increase of 12.7 percent, followed by the Corolla subcompact, up 32.4 percent to 23,822.

HOT MODELS: Sales of the Lexus ES more than doubled to 5,186 and the Lexus LS and GS models had dramatic gains but started from a smaller base.
