Jersey City Medical Center Deploys Meru 802.11ac Uninterrupted Care Network to Ensure High Performance of Clinical Applications

New Jersey Hospital Views New "Gigabit Wi-Fi" as Critical to Delivering Exceptional Experience for Patients, Visitors and Staff

SUNNYVALE, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 29, 2014) - Meru Networks® (NASDAQ: MERU), a leader in Wi-Fi networking, today announced that Jersey City Medical Center has deployed an 802.11ac Meru Uninterrupted Care Network to support extensive use of Workstations on Wheels (WoWs) and a BYOD program which enables each staff member to use as many as four mobile devices.

The regional healthcare leader deploys laptops with Citrix® XenDesktop® for access to patient care applications. Its doctors and nurses often carry two phones, a laptop and a tablet, all of which run over the Meru 802.11ac Wi-Fi network. Located in the middle of a major metropolitan area, the medical center is surrounded by Wi-Fi interference. The Meru 802.11ac allows the IT department to move EMR, patient monitoring and other critical traffic to the 5 GHz band, protecting it and ensuring high performance.

"Meru's wireless solution has become a key critical component to the infrastructure to successfully deploy and support the mobile work styles of today's users and their devices," said Stephen Li, CIO at Jersey City Medical Center. "Wireless is no longer a convenience but a necessity for 24/7 access to critical resources. No other vendor offers the seamless roaming and wired-like experience that Meru can offer."

The Jersey City Medical Center 802.11ac wireless network currently covers the main hospital plus eight additional facilities. The hospital continues to grow, and will expand to include a total of 15 sites by the end of 2014. Its staff includes more than 3,000 healthcare specialists, staff, administration and consultants, in addition to patients and visitors. Even with the high density of mobile devices, Jersey City Medical Center is able to prove the reliability of the Meru Uninterrupted Care network with Meru Networks E(z)RF® Network Manager, a centralized network management software application. The network was designed and deployed by Bakke Solutions, a Meru authorized partner.

"You can waste a lot of resources looking in areas that really don't need to be analyzed. Before we started using the E(z)RF suite, we spent a lot of time looking in the wrong areas," said Li. "Now we can go look at problems and quickly eliminate the wireless. The Spectrum Analyzer shows us new devices or if construction is creating interference and Network Manager keeps a history, so we can easily identify the root cause. It keeps us from wasting our time."

The Meru 'Uninterrupted Care Network'
Meru's Uninterrupted Care Network (UCN) enables hospitals to create separate Wi-Fi channel layers. This allows hospitals to offer the benefits of mobility for Wi-Fi enabled "Life Critical" devices such as telemetry and to help ensure reliable connectivity for those devices on their own dedicated RF channel.

Three Layers of UCN

  • Life Critical: One set of wireless channels can be dedicated for life critical applications and devices like smart infusion pumps and Wi-Fi enabled telemetry devices and for carrying wireless traffic only associated with these applications. Centralized monitoring conducted by Wi-Fi enabled devices is not only designed to improve clinician productivity, but may also help hospital in improving patient safety.

  • Mission Critical: A second channel layer can be dedicated for "Mission Critical" applications and devices to provide reliable connectivity and QoS for mobile enterprise applications such as EMR, VoIP, Citrix based CPOE and barcode medicine administration. This is designed to improve clinician productivity and increase patient satisfaction (HCAHPS).

  • Consumer Critical: UCN can also provide a "Consumer-Critical" layer, to enable patients to connect with friends and family using the Internet. Such family interaction has been shown to positively impact patient mood and treatment outcome, thus improving patient satisfaction scores.

"Jersey City Medical Center is proving that technology leadership is necessary for providing exceptional patient care," said Sarosh Vesuna, vice president and general manager of Meru's business units. "802.11ac Meru Uninterrupted Care Networks are an ideal solution for healthcare organizations that require business continuity under any circumstances. They can rely on our wireless solution and offer it as an incentive to recruit a highly talented staff to ensure consistent, superior healthcare."
