SPRING LAKE, NJ--(Marketwired - Nov 5, 2013) - New Jersey dentist Peter E. Ciampi, DDS, MAGD understands that many patients have certain fears -- and even severe anxiety -- when they so much as think about dental treatment. That's why he has made it a priority to stay abreast of the latest sedation dentistry techniques at Spring Lake Dental Care. Patients can have procedures such as dental implant restorations or porcelain veneers performed in a relaxing and controlled environment in which Dr. Ciampi is able to mediate fears and anxiety. After receiving a special permit in sedation from the New Jersey State Board of dentistry, Dr. Ciampi has utilized a multi-faceted approach to making nervous or fearful patients feel as comfortable as possible at his office.

In a recent blog post titled "Identifying Anxiety And The Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry," Dr. Ciampi reveals that anxiety management actually begins during the consultation process. "I ask my patients if they have any anxiety or fear of dental treatment, but I also look for physical queues from patients that might not be as comfortable admitting their nervousness." Dr. Ciampi says his practice is known for its sedation dentistry techniques, and he tends to see a large number of patients that experience dental anxiety. He notes that sedation dentistry is a three-step process that entails the initial identification of fear or anxiety in a patient, discussing with the patient possible causes for that fear or anxiety, and providing the patient with a variety of options for how to treat the condition.

Dr. Ciampi's preferred method of treatment for high-anxiety patients is oral conscious sedation, which does not induce full sleep and still allows patients to communicate with the dentist. During this treatment, a short-acting pill is administered in a dosage that lasts throughout the course of the dental work being performed, allowing the patient to feel immensely relaxed during the procedure but also to return to a state of full consciousness soon afterward. Oral conscious sedation is designed to help patients experience virtually no pain during the procedure.

As a committed practitioner of sedation dentistry, Dr. Ciampi recently attended a sedation class in October at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. A sedation permit requires that dentists complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years. Materials covered during the recertification class included the physiology and pharmacology of sedation, patient evaluation, patient monitoring, and medical emergencies. Because there are always new innovations in pharmacology and the medications are always changing, Dr. Ciampi says these continuing education courses and new management techniques are a vital component of sedation dentistry to ensure the comfort and safety of the patient. As Dr. Ciampi notes, "There are always some new pearls of information to take from these courses."
