KapStone Restarts Second Paper Machine in Longview Mill

Paper and paper products manufacturer KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation KS recently announced that it has restarted its second paper manufacturing machine in the Longview manufacturing facility. With this, the company is likely to gradually find its momentum following the work stoppage at all of its five paper machines at the Longview facility, initiated by the AWPPW union since Aug 27, 2015.

Earlier, the company had restarted the manufacturing operations of paper machine #10, which is reportedly the largest machine of the Longview mill. This machine produces containerboard that is primarily used for corrugated box plants in the Pacific Northwest region.

KapStone operates a total of 11 manufacturing machines at all the mills. The current restarted machine (paper machine #11) is billed as the most flexible machine in the Longview mill, which is capable of producing a broad range of kraft paper products for customers in the U.S. and abroad.

During the interim period when production was hampered by work stoppages, KapStone had been temporarily diverting some of the manufacturing operations to its sister mills. With two of its manufacturing machines at the Longview mill going full steam now, KapStone expects to ramp up production and meet its commitment to customers across the globe.

Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Northbrook, IL, KapStone is the fifth largest producer of containerboard and corrugated packaging products and is the largest kraft paper producer in the U.S.

KapStone primarily manufactures containerboard, corrugated products and specialty paper products. Kraft paper is utilized for making bags for agricultural products, pet food, baking products, cement and chemicals, and grocery bags. Despite a pan-American presence, the company largely focuses on the regional markets, operating 4 paper mills and 21 converting plants and 65 distribution centers.

KapStone presently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks that are worth a look now include Clearwater Paper Corporation CLW, Wausau Paper Corp. WPP and UPM-Kymmene Oyj UPMKY, each carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
