The Law Society of Upper Canada regulates the lawyers and paralegals of Ontario in the public interest. The Law Society ensures that all lawyers and licensed paralegals in Ontario meet standards of learning, professional competence and professional conduct that are appropriate for the legal services provided.
As part of this mandate, the Law Society's Hearing and Appeal Panels recently heard the following matters. Hearing and Appeal Panels are responsible for determining the appropriate disposition of cases.
Emmanuel Omon-Bhio Akioyamen (2010) of the City of Toronto Decision: The Lawyer was suspended for one month, commencing at the conclusion of his administrative suspension and continuing indefinitely until specified conditions are met. Howard Curtis Baker (1988) of the Town of Richmond Hill Decision: Further to the Decision and Order of October 18, 2011, the Lawyer shall pay costs of $4,000. Mary Martha Coady (1981) of the Town of Arnprior Decision: The appeals from the decision of the Order of the Hearing Panel dated December 11, 2009 were dismissed. A term of that order was varied. Dennis-Gwynn Gross of Sherkston, Ont. Decision: The application for a Class L1 licence was dismissed. Joseph Markin (1974) of the City of Toronto Decision: The Lawyer was suspended for 2 months, commencing on April 2, 2012. David Henry Peirce (1979) of Town of Aurora Decision: The Lawyer was suspended for four months commencing on April 30, 2012 and ordered to pay $8,000 to the complainant forthwith. Anthony Trung Lon Tran (1998) of the City of Toronto Decision: The Lawyer was reprimanded.
