Lawsuit Claims Dog Food Brand Is Killing Canines
A recent class-action lawsuit claims that man’s best friend is getting sick, and worse, from eating Nestle Purina’s Beneful dry dog food.
The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, says Beneful dry kibble dog food has caused more than 3,000 dogs to become sick or die in the last few years, NBC News reports. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, internal stomach bleeding, weight loss and malfunction or failure of the liver.
“The lawsuit claims toxins in Beneful are to blame, listing propylene glycol and mycotoxins as possibly harmful substances in the dog food,” NBC said.
Two similar lawsuits have been filed against Purina for its Beneful dog food in recent years, though both were dismissed, ABC reports.
In a statement from St. Louis-based Purina, obtained by WLWT-TV in Cincinnati, a company spokesman played down the most recent lawsuit:
Beneful is backed by Purina’s strict quality controls and comprehensive food safety program. Like other pet foods, Beneful is occasionally the subject of social-media-driven misinformation. Online postings often contain false, unsupported and misleading allegations that cause undue concern and confusion for our Beneful customers.”
Purina has until April 2 to file a formal response to the complaint.
In a separate class-action lawsuit settled in May, NBC said Purina and Waggin’ Train LLC agreed to set up a $6.5 million fund “to compensate pet owners who believed their animals were harmed after consuming jerky treats that were made in China.” But neither company admitted fault in the settlement.
