LOUISVILLE, KY--(Marketwired - Jun 26, 2013) - Online degrees can lead to quick and immediate success in the job market. According to the second annual Online College Students report from The Learning House, Inc. and Aslanian Market Research, close to 50 percent of recent online graduates received a raise, while one out of three received a promotion.
"Online degrees continue to gain in popularity, even as traditional enrollments are declining for the first time in decades," said Dr. David Clinefelter, Chief Academic Officer at Learning House and coauthor of the report. "The flexibility offered to online students, allowing them to study when and where they want, is a huge draw for those juggling work, family and school responsibilities."
In the nation's only annual study of online students, Learning House and Aslanian Market Research conducted surveys with 1,500 recent, current and prospective online students nationwide. The information can be used by colleges and universities to effectively develop and deliver online programs.
"Our research shows that online students are quick to make a decision and are dedicated to learning via an online format. Schools have an opportunity to serve an enthusiastic, motivated population with online degrees," said Carol Aslanian, Senior Vice President of Aslanian Market Research and coauthor of the report.
Other key report findings include:
- Worth their time and money. Only 4% of graduated students surveyed said getting their degree was not worth the investment of their time and money.
- Cannibalization of on-ground programs a myth. Only 15% of students considered a classroom-only program.
- Business programs stay strong. Business continues to dominate as the field of study, being the most popular undergraduate and graduate degree with 36% and 39%, respectively. STEM fields, however, are gaining in popularity.
- MOOCs making a difference. About 80% of the students surveyed found MOOCs compelling; in fact, many found the option very attractive.
