Legg Mason's Earnings Lag

Zacks

Legg Mason Inc.’s (LM) fiscal fourth-quarter 2013 adjusted earnings came in at 52 cents per share lagging the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 6 cents. Moreover, this came well below the year-ago figure of 88 cents per share.

Lower-than-expected results reflect higher operating expenses. Moreover, net client outflows in the quarter were a negative. However, growth in top line, aided primarily by improved investment advisory fees and other revenues was a tailwind.

Adjusted net income came in at $66.7 million compared with $123.6 million in the prior-year quarter. Including one-time items, Legg Mason reported net income of $29.2 million or 23 cents per share as compared with $76.1 million or 54 cents in the year-ago quarter.

Our Viewpoint

We believe Legg Mason has the potential to outperform its peers in the long run, given its diversified product mix and leverage to the changing market demography. However, in the near term, assets outflows will remain a significant headwind. Yet, with the restructuring initiatives and the cost-cutting measures, we expect operating efficiencies to improve, and dividend payments to continue to inspire investors’ confidence in the stock.
