Sergio Garcia held a press conference today where he repeatedly apologized for the "fried chicken" joke he made at an awards gala last night.

"I want to apologize to Tiger and anyone who I could have offended by the comment I made," he said.

He said the comment wasn't intended to be racist, explaining,  "It was a funny question. I tried to give a funny answer. .... I'm very, very sorry. I cannot apologize enough times."

He said he called Tiger's agent to speak directly with Tiger this morning, but he couldn't get through. He intends to apologize to him directly at some point.

He said he felt "sick" immediately after the dinner ended, and couldn't sleep last night.

The press conference lasted a little more than 10 minutes.

Sergio was on stage at the dinner when he was asked jokingly if he would invite Tiger over for dinner at the US Open. He responded, " We will have him 'round every night. We will serve fried chicken."

This morning, Tiger responded with an unforgiving statement on Twitter.

" The comment that was made wasn’t silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate...," he said, adding that he was confident Sergio regretted the joke.
