After Losing 100 Pounds, This Woman Is Sharing Her Weight-Loss Secrets

After Robin Strempek 39, of Crofton, MD had her daughter in her mid-20s, she struggled with weight gain, which made her worried. "There's an extensive history of poor heart health on my father's side, and I knew that carrying extra pounds would increase my risk even more," she says. By June 2011, she weighed 245 pounds, her marriage was ending, and she turned to food to cope. All of her blood work numbers were also in unhealthy ranges, and her doctor told her that if she didn't change, she'd die young.

How Robin lost 100 pounds in 18 months

ACTIVITY "I wasn't athletic at all, but I knew I was able to walk, so I thought I'd try that for two weeks to see if I liked it. I went walking for three miles around my office building with friends on my lunch break and enjoyed it, so I kept at it. My legs got stronger and over time, I could keep up with the group."

FOOD "I focused on eating a healthy breakfast first. Instead of having a bagel or sugary cereal, I switched to oatmeal with lowfat milk and cinnamon and bananas, or two eggs and two egg whites with veggies. Gradually, I started feeling better and made other changes, like replacing two to three cans of soda a day with water."

SIGNS OF SUCCESS "All of my blood work is now normal, and I have more energy for my 12-year-old daughter. The personality that I had inside has finally come out. I used to feel invisible, but now, when I put on my suit and heels, I think, I can command this room."

staying on track together

Robin and her younger sister, Melissa, 28, decided to start walking together in the evenings with Melissa's dogs, Patch and Fin. "We talk about everything: work, family, relationships, problems and aspirations. Sometimes we call one of our other two sisters and put her on speakerphone or FaceTime," says Robin. "It's extra-motivating to have an exercise buddy who keeps me on track."
