The number of machine to machine communication devices using wireless networks will at least triple by 2017, The New York Times quoted research firm Berg Insight as saying. As many as 50B machines will be connected to wireless networks by 2020, an Ericcson (ERIC) executive said, and smart meters and the auto industry are currently the leading users of machine to machine communications, the newspaper added.
