AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Maine's Department of Labor says the state's unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in October, the lowest figure reported in five years.
The department said on Friday that October's rate is down from 6.9 percent in September and 7.2 percent last year. It says Maine's rate is lower than the national unemployment rate of 7.3 percent.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that about 47,000 Mainers were unemployed, down nearly 4,000 since last year.
Republican Gov. Paul LePage applauded the announcement of the declining unemployment rate. He says the figures show that his policies like reducing taxes and streamlining regulations are helping Mainers get jobs.
