How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major stock indexes fared Thursday

U.S. stocks declined on Thursday stocks as investors digested more earnings results and reports on the economy, but the Dow logged its best start to the year in almost two decades.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 50 points, or 0.4 percent, at 13,860.58.

The S&P 500 fell 3.85, or 0.26 percent, to 1,498.11.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 0.18, or 0.01 percent, to 3,142.13.

For the week:

The Dow is down 35.4 points, or 0.25 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 4.85, or 0.32 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 7.58, or 0.24 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 756.44 points, or 5.77 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 71.92, or 5.04 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 122.62, or 4.06 percent.
