The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index closed at an all-time high Friday on strong earnings reports. Investors were encouraged by third-quarter earnings from General Electric, Morgan Stanley and Google that topped analysts' expectations. Google's stock rose above $1,000 for the first time.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 28 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 15,399.65.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.35 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,744.50.
The Nasdaq composite rose 51.13 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,914.28.

The Dow is up 162.54 points, or 1.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 41.30 points, or 2.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 122.41 points, or 3.2 percent.
For the year so far:
The Dow is up 2,295.51 points, or 17.5 percent.
The S&P 500 is up 318.31 points, or 22.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 894.77 points, or 29.6 percent.
