Stocks finished mixed on Friday after investors gave a lukewarm reception to economic data and third-quarter corporate results that gave them little to get excited about.

The Dow Jones industrial average and Nasdaq both had tiny gains, but by other measures, shares were lower. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell slightly, and more stocks declined than advanced on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 3.53 points, or 0.03 percent, to close at 13,107.21.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.03 points, or 0.07 percent, to 1,411.94.

The Nasdaq composite rose 1.83 points, or 0.06 percent, to 2,987.95.

For the week:

The Dow was down 236.30 points, or 1.8 percent.

The S&P 500 was down 21.25 points, or 1.5 percent.

The Nasdaq was down 17.67 points, or 0.6 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 889.65 points, or 7.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 154.34 points, or 12.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 382.80 points, or 14.7 percent.
