A surprisingly strong housing report helped push stocks modestly higher, even as weak earnings reports from Intel and IBM weighed on the Dow Jones industrial average.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 5.22 points, less than 0.1 percent, to close at 13,557.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 5.99 points, or 0.4 percent, to close at 1,460.91.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 2.95 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 3,104.12.

For the week:

The Dow is up 228.15 points, or 1.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 32.32 points, or 2.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 60.01 points, or 2 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 1,339.44 points, or 11 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 203.31 points, or 16.2 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 498.97 points, or 19.2 percent.
