How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Wednesday

Stocks were flat Wednesday after the latest earnings reports gave investors little impetus to extend a recent rally. Both the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 indexes traded slightly lower for most of the day, then recovered late in the day to close near breakeven.

The Dow closed up 7.22 points, or 0.05 percent, at 13,986.52.

The S&P 500 rose 0.83, or 0.05 percent, to 1,512.12.

The Nasdaq composite fell 3.10, or 0.1 percent, to 3,168.48.

For the week:

The Dow is down 23.27 points, or 0.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 1.05 points, or 0.07 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 10.62 points, or 0.3 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 882.38 points, or 6.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 85.93 points, or 6 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 148.97 points, or 4.9 percent.
