ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's Board of Public Works has approved a deal allowing a casino operator to buy the Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort near Cumberland.
The board voted 3-0 on Wednesday to approve the deal with Evitts Resort LLC, a unit of Lakes Entertainment Inc., of Minnetonka, Minn. The company has agreed to buy the western Maryland resort as a condition of a license it was awarded by the state in April to operate up to 1,000 slot machines there.
The resort inside Rocky Gap State Park is one of five approved Maryland casino sites.
Comptroller Peter Franchot, an opponent of slot machines, voted for the deal, because he says it will take the burden off of the state and its taxpayers for a project that always has struggled financially.
