McDonald's has been undergoing some pretty big changes lately. From all-day breakfast to changing their dollar menu, things have been looking different at the Golden Arches, and there seems to be even more changes to come. Due to an industrywide restaurant slump, McDonald's has decided to try something different and slash drink prices.

As the Chicago Tribune reports, sodas and McCafe specialty drinks (smoothies, frappes, espresso drinks) will be available for lower prices at all McDonald's locations across the U.S. Soft drinks of all sizes will go for $1, and McCafe drinks will cost $2. To compare, most McCafe drinks cost somewhere between $2 to $3. The drink promotion will start in April and run for a limited time, but there's been no word yet on exactly how long that will be.

But why drinks, instead of sandwiches or apple pies? As Peter Saleh, an analyst at BTIG explained to the Chicago Tribune, beverages are "some of the highest-margin products, so they can probably afford to do it." He added that gross margins for drinks can be as high as about 90 percent, while food is usually about 65 percent to 70 percent. Whatever the reason, we're sure to be first in line for our $2 frappe.
