SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Prescription drug distributor McKesson Corp. on Monday names Mark Walchirk president of its U.S. pharmaceutical business.

McKesson said the appointment is effective immediately. Walchirk was the chief operating officer of McKesson's specialty health business, and he has worked for McKesson since 2001. Previously he worked for Baxter Healthcare, Allegiance Healthcare and Encompass Group.

Brian Tyler, the former president of the U.S. drug division, was recently named vice president of corporate strategy and business development.

The company's pharmaceutical division supplies medication and clinical products to retail and independent drug stores, hospitals, health systems, and long-term care facilities. The specialty health business distributes specialty drugs, which require extra handling by medical professionals, and provides clinical and business support technology to physician practices.

McKesson shares rose 73 cents to $87.45 in morning trading.
