LONDON, ON , Sept. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - This Sunday hundreds of runners (and walkers) will participate in the Cash Store Financial Freedom Run for Diabetes Research in London . The race is one of 27 community runs across the country in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association and will help raise funds and awareness for diabetes.
- 1,386,000 Ontarians are living with diabetes - a number that is on the rise
- The estimated cost of diabetes in Ontario in 2013 is $5.6 billion
- One in four Canadians has diabetes or pre-diabetes. If trends continue, this will rise to one in three by 2020
- If left untreated or not properly managed, diabetes can lead to painful and sometimes life-threatening complications such as heart-attack, stroke, kidney failure, limb-amputation and blindness
