NEW YORK (AP) -- Insurance company MetLife said Wednesday that it had hired a new chief financial officer.

John C.R. Hele, 53, will join the company Sept. 4.

Most recently, Hele was CFO at Arch Capital Group Ltd., which writes insurance globally through operations in Bermuda, the U.S., Europe and Canada. Before joining Arch Capital in 2009, he headed finances at ING Group N.V. in the Netherlands.

The CFO is a company's top numbers cruncher and often its face to Wall Street analysts during presentations on earnings and other developments. MetLife has been without a permanent CFO since the company reorganized in November to try to leverage its growing international operations.

MetLife plans to announce second-quarter results Aug. 2.

Shares fell 4 cents to close at $28.64
