Total option volume is closing in on 5 million contracts, with relatively light action in most of the leading indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The options of the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) take the top spot as usual on the volume list with 594,000 contracts, 354,000 of which are puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 155,000 turn over, with 84,000 puts. Close behind are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 143,000, with 77,000 calls.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 120,000 contracts changing hands, led by 71,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) has 81,000 options traded, with 46,000 calls.
Following closely is the SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) at 80,000 options, dominated by 71,000 calls. And just behind that are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) with 79,000 contracts moving, with puts outpacing calls by more than 3 to 1.
