Option volume has surged today as 7 million contracts have already changed hands, with mostly bearish sentiment in the major indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.
Just over 1 million options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. Next up are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) with 504,000 options, dominated by 419,000 puts. Following closely are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options at 503,000, with 308,000 puts.
The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 296,000 options trade, with a puts outpacing calls by almost 3 to 1. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 262,000 contracts changing hands, with 151,000 puts. Next up are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) options at 214,000, with a put/call ratio of more than 3 to 1.
The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 106,000 contracts turning over, with 60,000 puts. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 102,000 options traded, with 60,000 puts.
