Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume tops 5.1 million contracts so far today, with relatively bearish sentiment in the top indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 553,000 contracts traded, with 341,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 134,000 options turn over, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 107,000 contracts changing hands, dominated by 83,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) just tops 100,000 with 60,000 puts .

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) is just shy of 100,000 options, with 56,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 63,000 options traded, led by 40,000 calls.
