Total option volume is relatively strong at 6.3 million contracts so far today, with mixed sentiment in the big indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
More than 1.1 million options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), led by 700,000 puts. Next up is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) at 344,000 contracts, with 200,000 puts.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 196,000 options traded, with 114,000 calls. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 176,000 contracts changing hands, with calls outpacing puts by almost 2 to 1. Close behind is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) at 169,000 options, 100,000 of which are puts.
The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 143,000 options turn over, with a put/call ratio of 3 to 1. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 134,000 contracts moving, evenly split between calls and puts.
