Total option volume has reached 5.3 million contracts so far today, with mixed action in the leading indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPX) has 573,000 options traded, dominated by 415,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 174,000, with 96,000 puts.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has just 91,000 contracts changing hands, with calls outnumbering puts by 2 to 1. Matching that volume is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) options, but with puts barely outpacing calls.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has just 80,000 options turning over, with calls eclipsing puts by 2 to 1. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 78,000 options traded, with 48,000 puts.
