Total option volume is closing in on 5 million contracts today while activity in the leading indexes and ETFs is relatively light, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 664,000 options traded, with 381,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 195,000 options turn over, with puts outpacing calls by 3 to 1.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 114,000 contracts changing hands, led by 86,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 83,000 options traded, with calls outnumbering puts by 3 to 1.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has just 60,000 options traded, with 40,000 puts. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) follows with 53,000, with calls slightly outpacing puts.
