Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is relatively light at 4.8 million contracts so far today, with mixed sentiment in the leading indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 437,000 options traded, with 276,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 218,000 contracts change hands, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1.

The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options follow with 164,000 as calls slightly outpace puts in that ETF. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 124,000 options turning over, led by 87,000 puts.

The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 98,000 contracts moving, with just a few more calls than puts. The iShares Silver Fund (SLV) was just behind at 91,000, dominated by 70,000 calls. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 83,000 contracts traded, with 51,000 puts.
