Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume remains strong today as 6.2 million contracts have traded so far, with mixed action in the leading indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
 
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 710,000 options traded, with 425,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen 202,000 options turn over, with 120,000 puts.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 178,000 contracts changing hands, with puts outpacing calls by more than 3 to 1. Not far behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) options at 166,000, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have traded 108,000 times, with 67,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has volume of 98,000, led by 60,000 calls. The iShares China Fund (FXI) has 90,000 options moving, with 65,000 puts.
