Total option volume is very strong today as more than 8.2 million contracts have traded so far, with the big indexes and ETFs dominating the action, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
More than 1.6 million of the SPDR S&P 500 (:SPY) options have traded, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) contracts with 616,000 as puts slightly outpace calls. And following are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 558,000, with 344,000 puts.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 251,000 contracts changing hands, with puts outpacing calls by 3 to 1. Just behind are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) options at 245,000, 134,000 of which are calls. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (:EEM) has seen 220,000 trade, with 154,000 calls.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 189,000 options traded, with 103,000 puts. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 158,000, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.
