Total option volume is strong again today, with relatively bearish sentiment in major indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 901,000 options traded, with 572,000 puts. Next up are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) options at 425,000, with a put/call ratio of more than 7 to 1. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 263,000 options moving, with a put/call ratio topping 2 to 1.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen just over 200,000 contracts trade, with calls outpacing puts by more than 3 to 1. Following are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 166,000, led by 102,000 puts. Just behind sit the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (:VXX) options at 160,000, with 83,000 calls.
The iShares Silver Fund (SLV) has 123,000 contracts changing hands, with calls outnumbering puts by 2 to 1. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has volume of 104,000, with 60,000 puts. And the SPDR Gold Shares Fund is closing in on the 100,000 mark, with 60,000 calls.
