Total option volume just tops 6 million contracts so far today, with the S&P 500-related names leading the action in indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
Just under 1 million options have changed hands in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), with a put/call ratio of almost 2 to 1. Next up are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) with 235,000 optoins as puts barely outpace calls. Just behind are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 234,000, with puts eclipsing calls by more than 2 to 1. Following those are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX), which is based on those SPX options, with 177,000 contracts led by 122,000 calls.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 158,000 contracts turning over, with 94,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 140,000 options traded, with 81,000 puts. And the SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) also has volume of 140,000 options, led by 91,000 puts. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) just breaks 100,000 contracts, with 57,000 calls.
