Midday index, ETF option volumes


Total option volume is just over 5.1 million contracts so far today, though the action in major indexes and ETFs is relatively weak, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 671,00 options traded, with slightly more puts than calls. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 173,000 contracts change hands as calls outpace puts by 4 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 141,000 contracts turning over, with 83,000 puts. Close behind are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 139,000, led by 98,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) follows at 130,000, with 81,000 puts.

The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) just breaks 100,000, with calls slightly outnumbering puts. And the iShares Brazil Fund (EWZ) has 85,000 options traded, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.
