Total option volume is strong at 6.3 million contracts so far today, with the big indexes and ETFs dominating the action, optionMONSTER data systems show.
Just over 1 million options have turned over in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), with 595,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 515,000, with puts slightly outpacing calls. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) follows with 320,000 options, 193,000 of which are calls.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 216,000 contracts changing hands, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 179,000 options traded, with 98,000 puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 144,000 options moving, with slightly more puts than calls.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 89,000 contracts traded, with 46,000 puts. And the SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) also has 89,000 options turning over, with 52,000 calls.
