Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume remains very light at 4.4 million so far today, with the primary indexes and ETFs making up much of the action, optionMONSTER data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has only 360,000 contracts as puts outpace calls by more than 2 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) follows at 150,000 options, with 93,000 puts. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) is next at 145,000 options, led by 96,000 puts.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 110,000 options traded, with 69,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 104,000 contracts changing hands, dominated by 96,000 calls.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has volume just shy of 100,000, with a put/call ratio of 3 to 1. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has seen 66,000 options turn over, evenly split between calls and puts. And just behind at 63,000 is the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX), with 39,000 calls.
