Total option volume is running light again at 4.8 million so far today, dominated by the large indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has just topped 500,000 contracts as puts outnumber calls by 3 to 1. Following is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) at 30,000 options, with 185,000 puts. Not far behind is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) at 260,000, led by 150,000 puts.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 180,000 contracts changing hands, with 107,000 calls. The iShares Japan Fund (EWJ) has seen 150,000 options turn over, with fewer than 300 puts trading.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 75,000 options moving, with 44,000 puts. And the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has volume of 74,000, including 41,000 puts.
