Midday index, ETF option volumes


Total option volume is running about average at 5.3 million so far today, with mixed action in the big indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 472,000 options traded, with slightly more puts than calls. Next up is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) at 370,000 as puts eclipse calls by 2 to 1.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 145,000 contracts changing hands, with puts outpacing calls almost by 2 to 1. Just behind is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) at 140,000 options, with 75,000 puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) just tops 100,000 options, with 60,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 69,000 contracts moving, led by 39,000 calls.
