Total option volume is strong again with 6.1 million contracts trading so far today as bullish sentiment reigns in the indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 796,000 contract traded, with 403,000 calls. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has seen more than 269,000 options turn over, with puts just outpacing calls.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 212,000 contracts changing hands, 113,000 of which are calls. Following are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) options at 196,000, with calls unusually outpacing puts.
Just behind is the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) volume at 194,000, led by 151,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 118,000 contracts moving, evenly split between calls and puts. Next up is the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) at 108,000, also with even volumes in calls and puts.
