Total option volume is running a bit light at 5 million contracts so far today, and the lack of action is notable in the major indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 508,000 options traded, with 320,000 puts. Next up is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) at 241,000 contracts, 153,000 of which are puts.
The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 155,000 contracts changing hands, with calls outpacing puts by 2 to 1. Not far behind is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) at 134,000 and a put/call ratio topping 2 to 1.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 96,000 options traded, also with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1. The iShares China Fund (FXI) has seen 54,000 contracts turn over, dominated by 42,000 calls. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) is just behind at 53,000 options, led by 32,000 calls.
