Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume has picked up a bit but is still below average at 4.8 million contracts so far today, with apparent hedging leading the way in the primary indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 758,000 options traded, with 594,000 puts. Next up is the S&P 500 Index at 218,000 options and a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 191,000 contracts changing hands as puts outpace calls by 2 to 1. Following is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 140,000 options, with 98,000 puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 116,000 options turn over, with 67,000 calls. Just behind is the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) at 115,000, led by 70,000 calls. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 109,000 contracts changing hands as calls slightly eclipse puts.
