Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is a bit light with at just over 5 million so far today, with the typical indexes and ETFs making up much of the action, optionMONSTER data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 569,000 options traded, with 357,000 puts. Next up is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) at 274,000, with slightly more puts than calls. Following is the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) with volume of 228,000 as calls outpace puts by more than 2 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 148,000 contracts changing hands with a put/call ratio of more than 2 to 1. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has seen 108,000 options turn over, with 61,000 puts. Close behind is the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) at 98,000 contracts, with 54,000 puts.

The SPDR Homebuilder Fund (XHB) has 74,000 options moving, dominated by 70,000 puts. And the SPDR Utilities Fund (XLU) has 69,000, with fewer than 2,000 calls.
