Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is just above average at 5.6 million so far today, with mixed action in the big indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 762,000 options traded, with 474,000 puts. Next up is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) with volume of 310,000 and a put/call ratio of more than 2 to 1.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 171,000 contracts changing hands, with 90,000 puts. Just behind is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) at 170,000, led by 108,000 puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 134,000 options moving as calls outpace puts by more than 2 to 1. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 70,000 turn over, with 45,000 puts. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 69,000, with 43,000 calls.
