Midday index, ETF option volumes


Total option volume is again running a bit below average so far today, with mixed action in the major indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 584,000 options traded, with 352,000 puts. Next up is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) with volume of 279,000 as puts slightly eclipse calls. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has seen 273,000 turn over, with 167,000 puts.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 186,000 contracts changing hands, 111,000 of which are puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 176,000 options traded, dominated by 154,000 calls.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 65,000 options moving as calls outpace puts by more than 2 to 1. And close behind is the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) at 61,000 contracts, with 33,000 puts.
