Total option volume is strong at 6.2 million contracts so far, with mixed action in the big indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.
Just over 800,000 options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) with 487,000 puts. Next up is the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (:EEM) at 397,000 contracts, with puts outnumbering calls by almost 6 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) has 290,000 options, with 180,000 puts.
The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) has 266,000 contracts changing hands as puts outpace calls by 2 to 1. Just breaking the 200,000 mark is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) as puts slightly eclipse calls. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 174,000 options traded, led by 109,000 calls.
The iShares EAFE Fund (EFA) has seen 168,000 options turn over, dominated by 158,000 puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 86,000 options traded, with 56,000 calls.
